General Studies Bachelor's Degrees in Oklahoma

General studies bachelor's degrees in Oklahoma are a list with one program far above the rest. Oklahoma State University's Interdisciplinary Studies BA in Stillwater has the highest score in the state at this level, 78.6, ranks 4th nationally and graduates 68% of its students on 223 degrees a year. The next program in the state, the University of Central Oklahoma, scores 54.3 with a 37% graduation rate, and no other public program here graduates more than 37%. Seven programs are ranked and 1 more, Oklahoma City University's, sits in the table of other programs.

Oklahoma State's $10,110 in resident tuition and fees is the highest among the public programs, so the top score comes at the top public price. Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva is the cheapest at $5,970 with a 30% graduation rate, Cameron University in Lawton is $6,900 at 31%, Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant $7,200 at 32%, Northeastern State in Tahlequah $7,513 at 35% and UCO $8,522 at 37%. Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, the one private program ranked, charges $29,600 and graduates 51%, the second-highest rate here, on 36 degrees.

Size tells a second story. UCO awarded 209 degrees, close to Oklahoma State's 223, and Southeastern awarded 115 and Northeastern 86, so a large share of Oklahoma's general studies bachelor's graduates come out of programs with graduation rates in the thirties. Cameron (22 degrees) and Northwestern Oklahoma State (19) are the smallest. Three of the seven are online: Southeastern, Cameron and Southern Nazarene.

    About the Program

You build the major from a pair of blocks, 15 hours in one primary discipline and 12 hours from a second discipline or area of concentration that your advisor approves. The primary discipline comes from a list of Arts and Sciences prefixes, including anthropology, computer science, economics, history, philosophy and psychology. A capstone finishes it, A&S 4013 Multidisciplinary Studies Capstone, unless your advisor approves a 3-hour capstone or internship in the primary discipline instead.

Upper-division work has a firm floor in this degree. No more than 9 hours may be lower-division in the major, and at least 40 of the 120 total hours must be in courses numbered 3000 or above. You also need a 2.00 GPA in the primary discipline as well as overall, which means weak grades in your main field can hold up graduation on their own.

Because this is a B.A., you have a foreign language requirement, which can be satisfied by 9 hours of college credit in the same language, including 3 hours at the 2000-level. Transfer credit has ceilings too. No more than one-half of major course requirements can be transfer work, one-fourth of hours can be earned by correspondence, and transfer correspondence hours stop at 8, so check where your existing credits fall.

How Much Does a General Studies Bachelor's Degree Cost in Oklahoma?

A general studies bachelor's degree in Oklahoma costs $8,018 a year in resident tuition and required fees at the median of the eight programs, and the six public universities span $5,970 to $10,110: Northwestern Oklahoma State $5,970, Cameron $6,900, Southeastern Oklahoma State $7,200, Northeastern State $7,513, UCO $8,522 and Oklahoma State $10,110. Southern Nazarene, the ranked private program, is $29,600, and Oklahoma City University, in the other-programs table, $34,486. Nonresidents pay $25,630 at Oklahoma State and from $11,664 at Northwestern Oklahoma State to $19,409 at UCO at the regional universities.

The state grant pays by the kind of university. The Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grant tops out at $2,000 a year at regional universities and $3,000 at research universities, or 75 percent of enrollment costs if that is less, which means the cap is higher at Oklahoma State than at UCO, Northeastern State or Southeastern. For adults, the State Regents' Reach Higher program offers specialized advising for adults returning to finish degrees, and its Finish Line Scholarship is open to residents seeking a bachelor's who take at least three credit hours a semester, so a one-course-a-term pace still qualifies.

How Does Credit Transfer Into a General Studies Bachelor's Degree in Oklahoma?

Credit transfers into a general studies bachelor's degree in Oklahoma in two layers: a guaranteed general education block for anyone holding an Oklahoma public associate in arts or associate in science, and course-by-course matching for everything else. The block is the minimum of 37 hours in English, literature, math, science, history and the arts that every undergraduate degree except the associate in applied science requires, and State Regents' policy guarantees that an associate degree satisfies all of it at the four-year university. That promise binds the six public universities on this page. Southern Nazarene and Oklahoma City University are private and decide for themselves.

Arrive without the associate and the matching rule takes over: you get general education credit for courses that match those at the receiving college, and the transfer matrices the State Regents distribute show which courses count as the same across the public system. Above the 37 hours, each university decides how upper-division credit from an earlier major fits a general studies degree, so ask for a written evaluation.

If your credits are old and scattered, the State Regents' Reach Higher FlexFinish track offers a bachelor of science in organizational leadership with a business focus or general studies option, taught in eight-week classes with five enrollment periods a year, on campus and online. Ask whether your university takes part.

How to Choose a General Studies Bachelor's Degree Program in Oklahoma

Choosing a general studies bachelor's degree program in Oklahoma starts with whether you can get to Stillwater, because Oklahoma State's program is campus based and nothing else in the state comes near its 68% graduation rate, even at $10,110. If you can't, the online programs are Southeastern Oklahoma State ($7,200, 32%), Cameron ($6,900, 31%) and Southern Nazarene ($29,600, 51%), and the private one finishes far more students for far more money. UCO is the large campus alternative in Edmond, with 209 degrees a year and a 37% rate at $8,522.

Bring your transfer credit knowing that every Oklahoma undergraduate degree except the associate in applied science requires at least 37 hours of general education, and that an associate in arts or science from an Oklahoma public college clears that block, so the hours above it are what the university has to evaluate. Ask how many upper-division hours from another major it will count toward the general studies degree, and whether it requires a minimum number of hours on its own campus. If you're an adult with old credits, ask whether the university takes part in the State Regents' Reach Higher adult degree completion program.

If you're starting with an associate degree, the general studies associate degrees in Oklahoma have their own page.
