General Studies Bachelor's Degrees in Wyoming

General studies bachelor's degrees in Wyoming are a single program, the University of Wyoming's Bachelor of General Studies in Laramie, and it ranks ninth in the national bachelor's ranking with a score of 75.9. It awarded 44 degrees in the latest year, graduates 59% of its first-time, full-time students, and charges $6,938 a year in resident tuition and required fees for 2023-24, with nonresidents paying $22,718. It's a campus program, and because it's the only general studies bachelor's in the state, it's the in-state destination for a general studies associate from any of the five community colleges.

The score comes from the combination the ranking rewards: a public price, a graduation rate above half, and enough degrees to be a real program rather than a handful of students. The five community college associate degrees that feed it charge $4,250 to $4,935 and graduate 33% to 49%, so UW's 59% is the highest completion figure of any general studies program in the state. The B.G.S. is public, so residency decides the price, and the gap between $6,938 and $22,718 is the largest single cost variable on this page.

    About the Program

Two focus areas and one 3-credit capstone make up the major. You pick the focus areas from a menu of 16 across the university, each fielded by a specific college and each at least 18 credit hours. No course can count toward more than one focus area, so you can't stretch one set of classes across both. The capstone also fulfills a University Studies Program (USP) requirement, and the degree is offered on the Laramie campus, online, hybrid and at UW Casper.

Of the 39 credits in the major, 21 must be upper division, with at least 6 of those in each focus area, and you need a C or better in every credit that counts toward the major. So neither focus area can be filled with introductory courses alone. No college core applies to the degree, and one USP Human Culture course and one Physical & Natural World course may also count toward the major.

Arriving with a lot of credit is what this degree suits, because UW says the degree helps students who have accumulated 60 credit hours finish, and the catalog says it's not designed for first-year students. Declaring the major takes more than a form, because you must first receive intensive advising from the assigned advisor in the ACES office. One pairing is closed for accreditation reasons, so you can't choose both the Management, Marketing, and Decision Science and the Accounting and Finance focus areas.

Employers of UW general studies alumni include ANB Bank, National Print Group, the State of Wyoming, Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino and Black Diamond Digital Imaging. Teaching is a different matter. The Bachelor of General Studies doesn't satisfy teacher licensure requirements through the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board, even with the education focus areas, so plan on a separate route if the classroom is your goal.

How Much Does a General Studies Bachelor's Degree Cost in Wyoming?

A general studies bachelor's degree in Wyoming costs $6,938 a year in resident tuition and required fees for 2023-24 at the University of Wyoming, the one program at this level, and $22,718 for nonresidents. That resident figure sits above the five community college associate degrees, which run from $4,250 at Western Wyoming to $4,935 at Northwest College, so finishing the first two years at a community college and the last two at UW is the lower-cost route the data points to.

Wyoming Works, the state grant Wyoming community college students hear about, stops at the community college door. The 2019 law provides grant funds for an eligible student who has been accepted by and enrolled in a community college to pursue a credential program approved by the commission, and those credentials are workforce programs where college academic credit shall not be a requirement, capped at six academic terms. A UW bachelor's is neither a community college program nor a workforce credential, so plan on UW's own aid and federal aid rather than Wyoming Works.

How Does Credit Transfer Into a General Studies Bachelor's Degree in Wyoming?

Credit transfers into a general studies bachelor's degree in Wyoming on UW's published terms, and they favor a Wyoming community college graduate. UW says students who complete a qualifying Associate Degree satisfy most lower-division University Studies Program general education requirements, so an associate from Casper, Northern Wyoming, Northwest, Western Wyoming or Central Wyoming arrives with most of the general education half of the Bachelor of General Studies done. Course by course, Wyoming community colleges use a common course numbering system, so most courses transfer directly to UW with the same course equivalency and University Studies Program credit.

The check you can run yourself is WyoTransfer. UW tells students transferring from a Wyoming community college to log in to the WyoTransfer portal with their community college credentials and see how their courses may transfer. Run it against the Bachelor of General Studies specifically, and then ask UW two things the portal won't settle: what qualifying means for the general studies associate at your college, since the awards differ, with Casper and Northwest conferring an Associate of Arts and Northern Wyoming an AS, and how many of your remaining credits count toward the B.G.S. itself rather than as electives.

How to Choose a General Studies Bachelor's Degree Program in Wyoming

How to choose a general studies bachelor's degree program in Wyoming is less a choice between programs than a decision about how to reach the one that exists, the University of Wyoming's Bachelor of General Studies. The data gives you a 59% graduation rate, 44 degrees a year, a ninth-place national rank and a resident price of $6,938 against $22,718 for nonresidents. If you're not a resident, that gap is the whole decision.

If you are, the question is where to spend the first two years. Starting at UW means paying $6,938 from the start. Starting at Northwest College, which graduates 49%, or Casper, which graduates 43% and can be done online, means two years at $4,935 or $4,410 and then a transfer that UW's qualifying-associate rule makes predictable. Ask UW whether the B.G.S. can be completed without relocating to Laramie, since the federal data lists it as a campus program, and ask how a transfer student's upper-division requirements are laid out, because a general studies degree built from transfer credit can leave a lopsided set of courses for the last two years.
